Android 17 QPR2 Beta 7.1 finally tackles the multi-second freezes Pixel owners have been dealing with

Google has announced that Android 17 QPR 2 Beta 7.1 is now live for compatible Pixel devices. This is going to be a big deal for folks that have been using the beta and dealing with performance issues. There’s only a single fix listed this time around, and it looks like it’s about to address this.

Any update is a good update

The Android Developers page for QPR2 Beta 7.1 shows only one fix listed as:

It’s not the most extensive or exciting thing to see, but sometimes betas turn out this way. Not every single update is going to come with a wealth of new features. But, those that were having issues with performance slow-downs will surely appreciate this update so long as it addresses their issues.

In order to get more clarity on this update, we’ll have to get some additional information from Mishaal Rahman, who is the Community Engagement Manager for Google. Rahman provides more details through his own X account sharing that the latest beta update fixes “Severe Ul stuttering and multi-second freezes under memory pressure from heavy page-reclaim thrashing and major page faults.”

So close to a public release

That last bit is important because it provides the details we need to understand the types of problems that are being solved. While newer phones might not feel the performance hit as much, we have to remember that this beta goes out to devices like the Pixel 6a and Pixel 7.

The Pixel 6a was released back in 2022 and didn’t exactly have the best processor. In beta, this kind of behavior is expected. While later revisions get smoother and smoother, there’s always a chance you’ll hit a rough patch. The worst part is that you’ll have to deal with that until Google fixes it.

That’s why Google offers plenty of disclaimers before you sign up. It’s also a good idea to run a beta on a secondary device. You don’t want the phone to have major problems when you need it the most. Perhaps most interesting about this update is the response it got from people looking for something completely different.

Just in time for the weekend

Judging from the comments in the Reddit thread for Android 17 QPR 2 Beta 7.1, folks don’t seem pleased with today’s announcement. To be honest, there’s nothing wrong with the Beta 7.1 release.

However, some are pointing out that Google has yet to release Android 17 QPR3 Beta 2. Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 was released on October 2, 2026, and people are left wondering what happened to the follow-up update.

It’s unknown when this beta will be released. So, for now, we’ll just have to be content with what’s out. If you’re interested in trying the beta, you can always sign up for the Android Beta Program. This program is available for the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 series, and newer.
