All new Kindles have this fan-favorite feature: replaceable batteries

The new Amazon Kindle range all have user-replaceable batteries, in line with the EU’s directives on batteries and the right to repair.

Kindles are already known for their excellent battery life, and this new addition means the latest Kindles are almost guaranteed to last for an exceptionally long time.

6 things my jailbroken Kindle can do that your Amazon-powered Kindle can’t

Replacing a Kindle battery is very easy

It’s about time

The new Kindles launched at the start of this month, and it seemed that Amazon had spent most of its upgrade budget on adding an aluminum frame. However, it seems as if that may have been the case.

As noticed by Good E-Reader, and previously hinted at in updates, Amazon has launched a new help page. Titled “Amazon Kindle Battery Guide“, it details how the new battery health for the latest Kindles works. Much like a battery health tool in your smartphone, it rates your Kindle’s battery health, and recommends action based on it.

While that page doesn’t outright state that batteries are user-replaceable, it’s not hard to read between the lines where the battery status is concerned.

If you have a new Kindle, you can find the battery health page by going to Settings > Device options > Battery > Battery information.

“Normal” means your battery is operating as intended, while “battery capacity limited” means it’s coming to the end of its use. Interestingly, there’s a third option here too, “incompatible battery.” As you’d expect, this means there’s a knock-off battery now installed, and the Kindle doesn’t recommend using it.

This tool works with all the Kindles released in 2026, including the basic Kindle, Kids editions, Colorsoft, and Paperwhite.

There’s not much point having those warnings if Amazon doesn’t intend for you to use them, and according to the report at Good E-Reader, the latest Kindles come with a different build to facilitate battery swaps.

Unlike previous Kindles, which had strongly glued plastic frames, the new plastic Kindles have back panels that can be pried off with a fingernail or spudger. Then, it’s simply a case of unscrewing four Philips screws holding the battery in, and replacing it with a new battery.

The aluminum models are a little more complex, as you’ll need access to a hex key screwdriver to unscrew the two screws at the bottom of the device. But once you’ve done that, you can just lift the battery right out to replace it.

If you’re curious about the process in more detail or where you can buy official replacements, Amazon has you covered. Firmware in the new Kindles contains QR codes that can send you to official instructions and replacement parts.

Considering the new Kindles don’t have much going for them outside a new aluminum body, we’re a little bit surprised Amazon didn’t make more of a big deal about this.

While easily replaced batteries haven’t been the norm for many years, the EU’s directive to partially bring them back has lead to more of them being available, and it’s broadly a very popular move amongst consumers. The battery is commonly one of the most hard-worked parts of a device, so they tend to break down before the rest. So having an easily replaced battery is key to a long-lasting device.

While not all brands will follow in the same way, Kindles having easily replaced batteries is a big reason to buy one of the latest versions. And if you’re not getting one, you can always save your battery the old fashioned way with some Kindle battery-saving tips.
