Long drives can be fun, but keeping everyone entertained for hours is a challenge, especially when traveling with family. Thankfully, Android Auto offers more than just navigation and music.
With the right apps and a few tweaks, I’ve turned my car’s infotainment system into an entertainment hub that keeps my family occupied, makes road trips feel shorter, and makes long journeys a little more enjoyable.
I use Gemini to make the journey more interactive
It can become part of the conversation
Long drives can be fun at first, but after a few hours on the road, we can run out of things to talk about, and even the most interesting conversations eventually fizzle out.
Kids can get bored or restless, too, especially when there’s still a long way to go. When we’ve racked our brains for something new to discuss, I turn to Gemini to help keep the conversation going.
When my niece is traveling with us, I like finding ways to keep her entertained beyond music.
With Gemini Live, I can start a natural, back-and-forth conversation by saying, “Hey Google, let’s talk live,” and ask it to share fun facts about our destination, explain landmarks we’re passing, or come up with trivia questions to keep everyone engaged.
This also turns an ordinary drive into a learning experience for kids. The idea is to use the car’s speakers and hands-free assistant to spark conversations that might not happen otherwise.
Let everyone have a say in the road-trip playlist
Music is still the easiest win
On long drives, music can become a source of disagreement. Someone wants the latest hits, someone else prefers old favorites, and kids inevitably request the same song for the tenth time.
My trick is to prepare a few playlists before we leave: upbeat tracks to start the journey, familiar family favorites for sing-alongs, and calmer music for when everyone needs a break.
I can also use voice commands to request a particular song, artist, genre, or playlist.
To do this, I say, “Hey Google, create a three-hour road-trip playlist suitable for both adults and kids.”
Switching between playlists and taking requests keeps the entertainment engaging, while voice controls allow me to focus on the road.
I make any selections before setting off or leave them to a passenger rather than interacting with the display while driving.
Turn Gemini into a trivia host
Test everyone’s knowledge
One of my favorite ways to keep my niece entertained on a long drive is to turn Gemini Live into a trivia host. I can have it quiz us on topics such as animals, space, geography, history, or the destination we’re heading to.
You could try a prompt like:
Hey Google, let’s talk live. Let’s play a family trivia game.
Ask us one easy question at a time about animals, wait for our answer, and then tell us whether we got it right.
You can also switch topics when the family gets bored, so the game stays fresh throughout the journey.
Make the most of entertainment during pit stops
Turn them into mini gaming breaks
Pit stops are a good opportunity to switch things up, especially when everyone needs a break from staring out the window.
Android Auto supports games on compatible setups while the car is parked, giving you another way to pass the time while waiting at a charging station or during a longer stop.
To get started, download a supported game from the Google Play Store to your Android phone. Connect your phone to Android Auto, open the app launcher on your car’s display, and look for the game among the available apps.
A few familiar games are worth checking out. Candy Crush Soda Saga and Farm Heroes Saga are good options for quick puzzle sessions, while Angry Birds 2 offers a more action-oriented challenge.
Having a few simple games ready is perfect for those stretches when we’re parked and waiting. If my niece is traveling with us, a quick game can be a welcome change from listening to music. The catch is that you must park the car before playing.
Android Auto makes family road trips more fun
Keeping everyone entertained on a long drive doesn’t have to mean handing over a phone or packing a pile of gadgets.
With a good mix of music, audiobooks, podcasts, and Gemini-powered trivia, Android Auto offers plenty of ways to make the journey more enjoyable.
I especially like having options that help kids learn something new while keeping everyone involved in the conversation.
