Google Health 5.11 lands with a big upgrade for activity tracking

Add Android Authority on Google:

TL;DR

  • Google Health version 5.11 is rolling out now on Android and iOS.
  • The update makes changes including an overhaul to automatic activity detection.
  • More than 100 workout types can now be automatically logged on compatible wearables, up from just 10.

Just in time for next week’s Fitbit Edge release, Google’s rolling out a new version of Google Health. Version 5.11 of the app is rolling out on now, and it makes a major improvement for automatic activity detection.

As reported by 9to5Google, Google Health version 5.11 expands automatic activity tracking from a handful of exercises up to more than 100, including strength training and swimming. This improved tracking is available on Fitbit Air, Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5, and the upcoming Fitbit Edge.

Activity will be automatically logged as a workout when your heart rate exceeds a certain threshold for a certain amount of time, though its not clear what the exact figures are. The Fitbit app will apparently try to tailor your automatic workout detection based on your usage, as you correct auto-logged workouts and manually add others that the app didn’t pick up on on its own. Google says this should make for more accurate tracking and fewer missed workout logs.

Google Health 5.11 is widely available now on iOS, 9to5 reports, with an Android rollout ongoing. Once you get the update on your own device, you should see a new screen pop up the next time you open Google Health, explaining the expanded automatic tracking. Google’s official changelog for the update also calls out new Health Guardian features — which, as our own Andy Boxall points out, can be a rather confusing suite of functionality.

Google’s latest fitness wearable, the Fitbit Edge, will hit store shelves with the new-and-improved workout detection next week, on Tuesday, October 27.
