The COVID-conscious lesbian bar in Western Massachusetts is closing. Last Ditch Bar and Arts Venue went viral after the Boston Globe reported on conflict sparked by the relaxation of its KN-95 mask policy.

Last Ditch announced the closure in an Instagram post on Monday, effective immediately (though excluding events that had already been booked). This doesn’t necessarily mean that the COVID-conscious lesbian bar is gone for good. Last Ditch stated that it was a “soft” closure, and put out a call for anyone interested in joining the business as owners — or taking over completely.

However, without such a saviour, it seems likely that this will be the end for Last Ditch.

Mashable Trend Report

“We have put our lives on hold to foster networks of care, resources, and a home base for organizing. It’s time we pass it on,” Last Ditch wrote in its Instagram post. “We’ve been fighting since the beginning to fill out the team, and we still don’t have a board/leadership to manage workers owned Co-op transfer.”

Last Ditch gained internet fame last month following a Boston Globe article detailing uproar surrounding changes to its masking policy. Online commenters had harshly criticised the decision, accusing Last Ditch of ableism and even calling for violence in some cases. The situation quickly spiralled out of control, involving apologies, retractions, public meetings, and furiously dissatisfied commenters, with the venue’s leadership team falling apart.

This outsized reaction may have been enough to spark Boston Globe readers’ interest, however it was the strange details and anecdotes within the article that really captured the internet’s attention. Though deputy editor Annalisa Quinn was reporting on the facts, the facts seemed to border on parody, with people reposting quotes such as “one [Last Ditch owner] had enrolled in clown school.”

While Last Ditch has been overshadowed by the furore surrounding it, the venue aimed to provide an inclusive and welcoming space for lesbians. With this week’s announcement, the LGBTQ community is now left mourning the loss of one of the scant few lesbian bars in the U.S.
