Google Maps brings fall colors to Android Auto

Add Android Authority on Google:

TL;DR

  • Google Maps is adding fall-colored trees to its Android Auto navigation experience.
  • The seasonal visuals are available in select US metro areas through November 30.
  • Google hasn’t announced availability outside the US.

Fall has arrived on Google Maps, and even the trees are getting into the spirit. The usual greenery along navigation routes is giving way to fiery reds, oranges, and yellows, bringing a splash of autumn color to Android Auto dashboards. For once, the scenery on your screen might actually match what’s outside your windshield.

Google confirmed the seasonal makeover in a post on X, saying the trees in Maps will match fall foliage in applicable US metropolitan areas through November 30. A screenshot shared on Reddit shows the change in Android Auto, where colorful miniature trees dot the streets alongside Google’s familiar blue route line.

The makeover adds another layer of realism to Immersive Navigation, Google’s ambitious 3D Maps redesign. The interface, which rolled out to Android Auto in July, already brings buildings, overpasses, terrain, and individual trees into sharper relief. Now, even those trees have a seasonal wardrobe.

The colors aren’t reaching every dashboard, though. Some drivers with the newer Maps interface still haven’t seen the fall foliage, while others are still waiting for Immersive Navigation itself.

There’s also a fascinating question beneath the pretty leaves: Does Google actually track when trees change color locally, or does Maps apply a blanket fall palette on a schedule? The company hasn’t explained that level of detail. Regional differences in peak foliage make the distinction worth exploring, especially when a map promises to reflect the world around us.

And once winter arrives, could snow-dusted branches be next? Google hasn’t said, but this small flourish makes that possibility awfully tempting.

There’s also no word on whether the seasonal colors will reach Europe or other parts of the Northern Hemisphere, where fall, or should we say autumn, is also in full swing.
