Chrome’s smarter autofill goes beyond passwords and reads your Gmail

In July this year, Google was spotted testing a “Find and Fill with Gemini” feature in Chrome to deliver a smarter, more personalized autofill experience, going beyond the usual addresses, passwords, and credit card details. Three months later, the company is rolling out enhanced autofill in Chrome, powered by Gemini with Personal Intelligence.

Chrome’s enhanced autofill feature can automatically suggest information from your Gmail inbox as you fill out online forms. As Google details in its announcement, Gemini with Personal Intelligence enables Chrome to surface your order numbers, tracking information, and flight bookings.

For example, when checking in for a flight, the browser will automatically pull in the booking code from your Gmail inbox so that you don’t have to go manually hunting for it.

Google says sensitive data is encrypted, and you have full control over the information that’s shared. So you can remove specific suggestions or turn off the enhanced autofill experience in Chrome’s settings.

For now, these enhanced autofill suggestions are rolling out in the US on desktop, Android, and iPhone for Gemini in Chrome users aged 18 or older who have enabled Personal Intelligence.

When the feature was initially spotted in testing, enhanced autofill suggestions in Chrome could even pull information from Google Photos and other connected apps. But that’s not the case with the iteration that Google has released to the public, as it’s limited to using Gmail as the source.

This Gemini-powered autofill experience in Chrome builds on the Google Wallet integration that Google rolled out for the browser in July this year.

Google also provides a way to check the source of these suggestions. On Android, suggestions from Gmail carry a Gemini icon. You can long-press a suggestion above your keyboard and tap “View sources” to open the original email in a new tab. This can be useful when you want to confirm that Chrome has surfaced the right information or booking details.

The same menu includes a “Remove suggestion” option, which lets you dismiss unwanted or outdated suggestions. This will not remove the original email from your inbox. It is only when you delete an email that its associated suggestion will also be removed altogether.

If the feature works as intended, it should save a lot of time when filling out various online forms, as you would not have to switch between tabs to find the booking references or order numbers. It should prove even more useful on phones, where jumping between apps and copying details from emails can feel unnecessarily tedious.
