Android 17 QPR3 Beta 3 puts useful Pixel features back on the menu

Less than a month after Google released the first Android 17 QPR3 beta, the company has pushed the third beta for compatible Pixel phones. Google’s official release notes for the new build highlight a number of bug fixes — 26 in total! — and stability improvements, but there’s more to the update than that.

As Mishaal Rahman, Google’s Android community manager, points out in a thread on X, Android 17 QPR3 Beta 3 brings back some features Google removed in previous QPR beta builds.

This includes native app lock functionality, which lets you protect individual apps from unauthorized access. Unlike app lock solutions on other Android phones, Google’s implementation uses your device credentials, so you can’t set a separate PIN, pattern, or password.

Lock screen UI blur is back, too, with the effect visible on lock-screen shortcuts, the fingerprint button, and notifications in the latest Android 17 QPR beta.

Another useful change is the ability to launch apps in bubbles right from the Recents app menu. This will be particularly useful for users who prefer a third-party launcher over the stock Pixel Launcher.

There’s also a new camera tile for the Quick Settings panel, adding another way to launch the camera app on your Pixel phone. Lastly, Android 17 QPR3 displays the alarm time in AM or PM on the lock screen — a minor but important usability improvement.
