Eseye looks to enhance IoT profile choice with SGP.32 deployment

In the next phase of providing businesses with technology based on the internet of things (IoT) standard, global IoT connectivity services provider Eseye has launched AnyNet Select For SGP.32 Deployments, designed to give enterprises access to a further choice of local and regional connectivity profiles through a single global proposition.

Created by the GSMA, the industry body responsible for global mobile communication standards, SGP.32 is a global, next-generation embedded subscriber identity module (eSIM) standard for remote SIM provisioning (RSP) in IoT devices – especially those with no user interface.

It is also designed to make it easier to remotely manage IoT device connections, particularly constrained endpoints. The SGP.32 standard introduces the eSIM Orchestrator (eSO) role, which manages profile lifecycle, network selection, compliance and unified billing.

It is designed to enable the large-scale, hands-off management of eSIM profiles, making it easier to deploy and operate IoT without physical access.

While eSIM technology has been available for consumer devices, managing digital SIM profiles in IoT devices has presented what are considered unique challenges. For example, many IoT devices lack a user interface, making manual SIM management impractical.

SGP.32 is built to address such limitations, and builds on existing eSIM technology, introducing a more efficient way to remotely manage IoT connectivity. It is intended to allow SIM profiles to be managed remotely through a centralised platform, enabling automated updates and provisioning – even for devices without user interfaces or located in hard-to-reach areas.

Assessing the emergence of the eSIM Orchestrator as a distinct role in the IoT connectivity ecosystem, Matt Hatton, founding partner at research firm Transforma Insights, said: “SGP.32 creates much greater flexibility around profile management, but enterprises also need to think about the wider operational, commercial and compliance implications. The providers that can bring those elements together will play an increasingly important role in simplifying global IoT connectivity.”

Regarding the launch, Eseye stressed that every IoT deployment is different, and that AnyNet for SGP.32 will give enterprises the flexibility to choose the connectivity and level of control that fit their requirements. It believes that SGP.32 is opening a new era for global IoT, where connectivity is no longer constrained by a single profile, network or operating model.

“SGP.32 gives enterprises far greater freedom over how their devices connect, but choice on its own isn’t enough,” said Ian Marsden, chief technology officer and co-founder at Eseye.

“The real opportunity is putting the right connectivity in the right place and evolving it as requirements change, without introducing greater operational complexity. AnyNet Select dramatically expands that choice, while our broader AnyNet proposition provides the orchestration intelligence, resilience and global connectivity infrastructure needed to make it work at scale.”

Working initially across Brazil, the US, Africa and Europe, AnyNet Select works by bringing together local and regional connectivity profiles for SGP.32 deployments, enabling localisation where market, regulatory or technical requirements demand it.

For example, enterprises can access these profiles through Eseye’s service or select and manage them directly or via an application programing interface. Intrinsically, SGP.32 gives enterprises greater freedom to download, enable and change connectivity profiles throughout the device lifecycle.

The broader AnyNet for SGP.32 proposition combines AnyNet Select profile breadth with access to multiple Eseye-managed eIMs, orchestrated with resilient bootstrap and fallback connectivity built on Eseye’s existing AnyNet eSIM products and a global network environment spanning supported AnyNet profiles. Users can choose a fully managed service or take more direct control, while retaining the flexibility to incorporate compatible third-party SGP.32 profiles.

Going forward, Eseye said it will also work alongside customers’ original equipment manufacturer partners and wider IoT ecosystems to support the delivery of SGP.32 across devices, connectivity, manufacturing and operational environments. This collaborative approach, it assured, would help enterprises align the different components of their deployment and translate greater profile flexibility into a scalable, operational service.
