Hyundai To Offer 10 Electrified Models By 2022—and Most Will Be SUVs

Recently, Hyundai has promised to offer more hybrids and plug-in hybrids with its existing core lineup. And now that the Ioniq line is splitting off into its own EV brand, the company has a new set of electric vehicles on deck in the coming years. By 2022, Hyundai will offer ten electrified models. Given current market trends, we’re not surprised this group will include seven SUVs and only three cars.

So, What Are the New Hyundai Hybrids and EVs?

Joining the larger Sonata Hybrid, the Elantra Hybrid enters the fray later this year. The new compact sedan is projected to achieve more than 50 mpg in combined city and highway driving. The only other electrified sedan coming by 2022 is the Ioniq 6. Hyundai hasn’t announced its size, but the electric car looks reasonably large in the graphic below. Its design will take after the wild-looking Prophecy concept shown earlier this year. There are your three cars.

On the SUV front, the Tucson Hybrid will boast 30 percent greater efficiency than the gas model. It arrives next spring, followed by a plug-in hybrid Tucson next summer. The latter model will boast quite a bit of power and be able to travel 28 miles on electric power alone. The Santa Fe will receive hybrid and plug-in variants as well. The hybrid arrives in early 2021 followed by the plug-in later that year.

The Hyundai Kona EV, which we actually prefer to the gas-powered model, will remain in the lineup. So will the Nexo hydrogen fuel-cell electric crossover. The fully electric Ioniq 5, a new midsize crossover, launches early next year. It will borrow cues from last year’s radical 45 concept. It won’t happen in the 2022 timeframe, but Hyundai will also launch a large SUV dubbed the Ioniq 7 in early 2024.

If you’ve had your eye on the current Ioniq, know that Hyundai will offer a 2022 model. The hatchback will be available into the 2021 calendar year, the automaker has confirmed.
