More details of LG’s Rollable, Rainbow emerge ahead of 2021 launch

  • More details have emerged detailing LG’s forthcoming rollable smartphone and Rainbow flagship.
  • The Rainbow is said to pack a Snapdragon 888 chipset and active stylus support.
  • The LG Rollable’s display will reportedly stretch to 7.4-inches when required.

In a bid to rejuvenate its smartphone business, LG will hit 2021 running with at least three key smartphone models. Per a report from Korean outlet ETNews, the company will launch a budget phone, a rollable device, and a traditional flagship in the first half of next year.

Referred to as the LG Rollable, the scrolling, stretching smartphone is said to sport a 6.8-inch screen that can scroll out to 7.4-inches. That gain doesn’t seem massive, but the design reportedly keeps the advantages while skirting several negatives associated with foldables. LG’s Rollable is said to be thinner and lighter than folding equivalents, while the screen design ensures there are no creases or wrinkles.

If LG sticks to its rumored March 2021 launch date for the Rollable, it’ll be the first commercially available scrollable phone from a major player. LG’s betting big on the form factor with the likes of Oppo and Samsung also set to join it in the space in the future.

The outlandish design of the rollable may alienate some users, but LG won’t abandon its traditional form factor fans. The LG Rainbow – the company’s early flagship of 2021 – will sport a design inspired by the LG Velvet but effectively take the place of the LG V70. The Rainbow is said to pack the Snapdragon 888 SoC and include Wacom active stylus support. If Samsung doesn’t launch a Note this year, this LG might be a solid alternative. A March 2021 launch date is predicted.

Finally, a budget 5G smartphone called the LG Q83 is also expected to launch in the first half of 2021. Although not as exciting as its two siblings, it would give 5G phone shoppers on a budget another option. No launch date has been given for this particular model.
