2021 Volvo S90 Sedan and V90 Wagon First Look

March 7, 2020

The Geneva show was canceled due to COVID-19 coronavirus, but thankfully the carmakers moved forward with their planned model announcements and updates. Among the new or refreshed vehicles shown in this ersatz online auto show are the updated Volvo S90 sedan and V90 wagon, and the latter’s slightly off-roady Cross Country variants.

Chief among the updates is the addition of Volvo‘s 48-volt mild-hybrid drivetrain system, which is now available as optional equipment on every model in Volvo’s range. The 48-volt system recaptures kinetic energy during braking, allowing the recaptured energy to be used for acceleration, helping to reduce fuel consumption by up to 15 percent according to Volvo, thereby reducing emissions. The mild-hybrid appears to be the extent of the under-the-skin upgrades to the new S90 and V90.

Visual updates are also part of the upgrade plan for the new big Volvo sedans and wagons, including full LED lighting, sequential turn indicators, a new rear-end lighting design, new fog lights, a new rear spoiler design, and a new lower front bumper style. On top of the re-sculpted bodywork and updated lighting, Volvo is offering a new range of exterior colors and new wheel options to allow further customization.

On the technology front, a “comprehensively upgraded” Bowers & Wilkins audio system brings with it a stronger amplifier, automatic noise compensation, and a new “jazz club” audio environment setting. Joining the B&W audio is a new Advanced Air Cleaner system with a PM2.5-rated particle sensor. The AAC system can clean all cabin air of even tiny particles in just minutes. The AAC system also allows the driver to monitor interior air quality.

Other updates for the S90 and V90, as well as their Cross Country variants, and the 60-series cars, too, include standard dual USB Type-C charging ports in the rear seat, in place of the previous 12-volt outlets. Wireless phone charging is also now available across most 60- and 90- series models. The cabins of the V90 and S90 are mostly untouched—and that’s fine, as they were already very nice—but tailored wool-blend seat upholstery is now available on all S90 and V90 variants.

Volvo hasn’t yet announced a U.S. arrival date for the updated S90 and V90, but we expect more information on pricing and specifications for the updated Volvo S90, V90, and V90 Cross Country in the coming months.
