Rumors have swirled of Samsung unveiling a Galaxy Chromebook sequel, and now there’s a clue as to what that Chrome OS machine will entail. Well-known tipster Evan Blass has shared what he says is the first leaked image of the Galaxy Chromebook 2, and it appears Samsung was (mostly) happy with last year’s design.
The 2-in-1 system would share the slim, boxy design of the original, with a few conspicuous changes. Samsung would extend the Galaxy Chromebook 2’s color (including the hot red hue) to the sides, and you’d find “rearranged” ports that still include USB-C, a microSD card slot, and a headphone jack. Not that these are necessarily problems — the first Galaxy Chromebook was an eye-catcher.

Any major changes are likely to be on the inside. Provided Samsung sticks with Intel chips, the Galaxy Chromebook 2 might leap to 11th-generation Core processors. That could bring significant performance improvements, particularly for graphics-intensive tasks. We wouldn’t count on a MacBook Air-like fanless design as Blass hopes for, but we can’t rule it out.
It’s not certain just when Samsung might introduce the new Chromebook. A CES 2021 introduction may be the strongest possibility when the first Galaxy Chromebook debuted at the 2020 show, but we can’t completely rule out a premiere at Samsung’s expected January 14 event for the Galaxy S21. If this leak is accurate, we wouldn’t anticipate a lengthy wait for a relatively evolutionary design.
