Gimbal camera returns, now with Carl Zeiss

  • Vivo has launched the Vivo X60 series in China.
  • The two phones share plenty of features in common.
  • Expect the X60 Pro Plus to be revealed in late January.

The Vivo X50 series marked a step up for the brand in some ways, as the Vivo X50 Pro in particular delivered a micro-gimbal camera setup. This resulted in excellent low-light image quality and judder-free video recording.

Vivo confirmed that the X60 series was coming before the end of the year, adding that it would offer a camera setup designed in partnership with Carl Zeiss. Today is the day, as the firm has now launched the X60 and X60 Pro in China.

Vivo X60 series: What to expect?

Vivo’s two phones share several features, such as an Exynos 1080 upper mid-range SoC, 33W charging, and a 6.56-inch FHD+ 120Hz OLED panel with a center-mounted punch-hole cutout (hosting a 32MP sensor). The company also touted a camera system designed in partnership with Zeiss, and the two phones share features in this department too.

Expect to see a 48MP camera with a second-generation micro-gimbal setup, a 13MP 2x portrait lens, and a 13MP ultra-wide shooter (120 degree field of view) on both phones. But the Vivo X60 Pro also gains an 8MP 5x periscope zoom lens capable of up to 60x digital zoom. Interestingly enough, the brand is also adding a feature to restore black and white photos and the ability to colorize these snaps.

Other notable shared features include an in-display fingerprint sensor, camera-based face unlock, NFC, Bluetooth 5.1, and Vivo’s OriginOS Android skin.

Otherwise, the two phones differ in several other areas, with the Pro featuring a 4,200mAh battery versus the standard model’s slightly bigger 4,300mAh battery, and a curved display versus the vanilla variant’s flat screen. The X60 Pro also features a glass back with a so-called satin finish that doesn’t attract fingerprint grease. Furthermore, the Pro variant’s main 48MP camera packs a huge f/1.48 aperture compared to the standard variant’s f/1.79 aperture.

Expect to pay 3,498 yuan (~$536) for the 8GB/128GB Vivo X60, 3,798 yuan (~$581) for the 8GB/256GB option, and 3,998 yuan (~$612) for the 12GB/256GB variant. Meanwhile, the Vivo X60 Pro will retail for 4,498 yuan (~$689) for the sole 12GB/256GB variant.

There’s no word on global availability for these phones, but Vivo confirmed on Weibo that it will be launching the X60 Pro Plus in “late January 2021.” The firm hinted at a Snapdragon 800 series processor in tow, presumably being the Snapdragon 888 SoC.
