New Samsung Galaxy Labs module brings CPU control

  • Within the Samsung Galaxy Labs app, there’s a new module called Thermal Guardian.
  • Thermal Guardian allows you to control your Galaxy phone’s level of CPU throttling.
  • This is a great new option for Samsung power users who want to squeeze the most juice out of their device.

A few days ago, Samsung quietly pushed out a new module within its Galaxy Labs app. The module — known as Thermal Guardian — gives you limited control over your phone’s CPU throttling. It enables you to increase CPU power slightly at the cost of higher thermal temperatures. Conversely, you can do the opposite and keep your phone running cool with slightly lower-powered CPU processing.

Now, Samsung isn’t letting you go hog wild here for obvious reasons. You can only tweak your CPU’s output by two degrees in either direction. In other words, you can make the CPU run two-degrees warmer or two degrees cooler than usual, but no more than that.

Still, milking even a little more power out of an aging CPU could net big gains. If you have an older Samsung Galaxy phone, an extra bump in juice could be the difference between a consistent framerate in a high-end mobile game, for example. On the other hand, knocking your CPUs heat output down by two degrees could help your newer Samsung phone last longer since it won’t be taking on as much heat.

You can find the Thermal Guardian module in the Samsung Galaxy Labs app, which you can download from the Galaxy Store. It joins previous modules that help analyze battery life and optimize your apps.
