Sony disables workaround that let you buy PS3, Vita, and PSP games via the web

PlayStation users who have been using an old web workaround to buy PS3, PSP, and PlayStation Vita games discovered over the weekend that it was no longer possible. This lends some credence to the rumors that Sony is planning to permanently shut down the stores for those consoles sometime this year.

To be clear, PlayStation players haven’t been able to access PS3, Vita, or PSP games via the main web store in quite some time. Sony rolled out a new store last year that removed all of these games from the roster, as well as the wishlist feature. Users had been accessing their wishlists and buying older games via an older version of the Store. However, now even that older version isn’t accessible anymore, as ResetEra users discovered this weekend.

A report from TheGamer earlier this month said that Sony was planning to shutter the stores on the consoles, which would mean no one will be able to digitally buy, download, or update games on those consoles. It makes sense, considering all three consoles are now retired. But still, there are several games available on these consoles that you can’t get anywhere else. For example, not only are there several excellent Vita games, but the Vita is also the only official way to play several PS1 classics digitally.

Sony still has yet to confirm any closure of the stores, but it’s not looking good. Sony still has yet to provide a way for gamers to really access or play its older titles, and simply offering remakes for a handful of titles isn’t enough. An optimistic view is that Sony will eventually offer these older titles to play via some revamped version of its PlayStation Now service, but we’ve yet to hear any hint of that from Sony itself.

Most Oculus store games support cross-buy between the Rift and Quest, but there are a few games too large or ambitious to ever fit on a mobile headset. Using a VR-capable PC and Oculus Link, you can and should play these Oculus Rift exclusives on your Quest. Trust us: They’ll blow you away compared to what the Quest is capable of on its own.
