This weekend, the first official 2021 Ford Bronco, the SUV with VIN 001, was auctioned to the highest bidder by Barrett-Jackson—for $1,075,000. Of course, the proceeds are going to charity, specifically in support of the National Forest Foundation and Outward Bound. Both charities are geared toward spreading understanding of the outdoors and a sense of conservation—perfect, given how a new Bronco is sure to be best enjoyed way off the beaten bath.
But wait a second, you might be thinking—someone just took home a new Bronco, and we’re all down here waiting to do the same while initial production is delayed, so what gives? Not so fast. No, the Bronco isn’t available yet, and no, the winning bidder at Barrett-Jackson isn’t driving home right now in a brand-spankin’ new two-door Bronco First Edition.
The Bronco that crossed the block this weekend was a representative model. So, while the Lightning Blue Bronco First Edition with the Sasquatch off-road package, 310-hp twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6, B&O audio system, and sweet Navy Pier (blue!) leather seats looks like the real deal, it’s merely a stand-in for the real deal that the buyer will take delivery of at a later date. Per Barrett-Jackson, the winner can customize their new number-one Bronco by way of factory options and accessories, though the rig will be blue-over-blue as was the stand-in, with a factory brush guard and a black hardtop.
Even though the First Edition Broncos are set to be rare, though less so following Ford’s decision to expand First Edition production, there will only be 7,000 made. This one will be by far the most expensive, and there’s no rarer position in this world than being first—and VIN 001 guarantees it.
