Nokia 8.3 5G announced alongside new Nokia lineup

Update, March 19, 2020 (10:15 AM ET): HMD Global has clarified (thanks, Android Police) that the Nokia 8.3 5G and Nokia 5.3 won’t carry the Android One branding, but will offer the same two years of OS updates and three years of security patches as other Nokia smartphones.

It’s certainly a strange move and one that doesn’t reflect wonderfully on the Android One program. Google’s initiative already had very few partners on board, with Motorola and Xiaomi the only other major players.

Thankfully, it seems as though end-users will still receive the same benefits of Android One such as software support and stock Google apps.

Original article, March 19, 2020 (1:00 PM ET): Nokia has one of the most far-reaching smartphone lineups available. Today, that lineup just got even more robust with the addition of three new smartphones and one feature phone, all of which feature headphone jacks: the Nokia 8.3 5G, Nokia 5.3, Nokia 1.3, and Nokia 5310.

Nokia 8.3 5G

The most premium of these new handsets is the Nokia 8.3 5G. As the name alludes, this smartphone is the first 5G-capable Nokia device. Nokia claims it’s also the first global 5G smartphone with support for all global 5G networks. That means it has a higher number of 5G radio bands than any phone available now.

The Nokia 8.3 5G touts a 2,400 x 1,080 6.81-inch display, and it can scale SDR content to HDR. The chassis features an aluminum frame sandwiched by glass around the front and back. It comes with the Snapdragon 765G, 6 or 8GB of RAM, 64 or 128GB of expandable storage, a 4,500mAh battery, and Android 10 under the hood.

Around back, it features a quad-camera sensor setup with a 64MP primary shooter, a 12MP super wide-angle lens, a macro lens, and a depth sensor. The Nokia 8.3 5G also features dual-SIM card support and a fingerprint sensor embedded in the power button. It will be available this Summer for a reasonable €599 (~$646).

Nokia 5.3, Nokia 1.3, and Nokia 5310

The other three new Nokia handsets may not be as premium as the 8.3 5G, but they still offer quite a bit of value for the price.

The Nokia 5.3 features the Snapdragon 665 SoC, a 1,600 x 720 6.55-inch display, up to 6GB of RAM, up to 128GB of expandable storage, and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. It also touts a 4,000mAh battery, a rear quad-camera setup, and the chassis looks quite similar to the Nokia 8.3 5G. It will be available this April for only €189 (~$204).

The lowest-end smartphone of the bunch — the Nokia 1.3 — comes with the low-end Snapdragon 215 processor, a 1,520 x 720 5.71-inch display, 1GB of RAM, 16GB of expandable storage, and a 3,000mAh battery. It’s powered by Android Go, and it will be available to purchase this April for only €95 (~$102).

Nokia’s latest feature phone — the 5310 — rounds out the bottom of the lineup. This is a music-focused 2.5G handset, featuring front-facing speakers, a removable 1,200mAh battery, and either a white or black chassis. The Nokia 5310 will be available this March for only €39 (~$42).
