Four-and-a-half tons. That’s 9,000 pounds and change. The 2022 GMC Hummer EV Pickup was never going to be a bantamweight fighter in the “light truck” class, but there’s something about seeing the number in print—and comparing it to other large pickups, but we’ll get there in a minute—that gives the new Hummer pickup’s curb weight more impact.
As GM-Trucks.com reports, the Edition 1 model with every option will max out at 9,046 pounds. We confirmed the number with a GMC representative, who added that the figure represents a “fully optioned out Edition 1 Pickup, which includes the full off-road kit and every bell and whistle … [T]he GMC HUMMER EV – the world’s first all-electric super truck – has unmatched super capabilities, all in a zero emissions package. With specs like 1,000 horsepower, 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque and a blistering 0-60 mph time of 3 seconds, the GMC HUMMER EV Pickup is bound to shatter expectations of what an electric vehicle can do.”
So, yes, the weight figure is accurate. (And the torque figure the rep quoted is a bit misleading—read our breakdown of that right here. ) It’s also a big, big number. Take the heaviest possible configuration of a 2021 Ford F-450 dually: 8,587 pounds, per the manufacturer’s spec sheet. That’s still a full 459 pounds short of the GMC Hummer’s on-paper figure. But we’ve tested trucks in the ballpark of the porky Hummer; the 2019 Ram 3500 Heavy Duty Limited 4×4 rang up at 9,060 pounds on our scales, and a few years back a 2015 Ford F-450 Platinum Super Duty weighed in at 9,083. The GMC Hummer is heavy, no doubt about it, but it won’t exist in a vacuum.
Why is the GMC so heavy? The answer is that batteries are frighteningly heavy, especially when you fit enough into a large vehicle to provide it with serious performance and range. Remember, GMC claims the pickup’s Ultium battery provides 350 miles of range—it’s a big battery pack. Even advanced packs like GM’s Ultium are still relatively heavy per unit of energy. GM recognizes that—everyone who is invested in producing battery packs recognizes that—and is working on solutions, including solid-state or solid-state-like battery technologies that will increase energy density (and thus, reduce weight).
It’ll be interesting to see how the sheer mass of the GMC Hummer Pickup affects its dynamics. Until then, we’ll just gawk at the impressive stats—and that jaw-dropping weight figure.
