LG phones no longer in production, allegedly

Earlier this year, Korean electronics giant LG announced that it would exit the smartphone market in August 2021. The news was surprising, but not unexpected, considering the company’s market share has dwindled over the years.

According to Korean news outlet Asiae.co.kr (h/t 9to5Google), LG may have just taken a big step towards the end of its smartphone legacy. The Asiae.co.kr article says that the company will end production of smartphones today.

This means that the unopened LG phones out there right now are the last brand new phones you’ll be able to find. LG will likely spend the next few months selling through its stocks as best it can to milk as much profit as possible. As such, expect heavy discounts on LG devices throughout the rest of 2021.

If you are thinking about taking advantage of those expected deals, LG assures us that it will continue to update its phones for three years after the original release date. That means the two most recent LG flagships — the LG V60 and LG Velvet — should receive support until 2023.

Thankfully, many of the workers at the Vietnam factory that produced LG Phones will retain their jobs. LG has allegedly converted the factory to produce household appliances instead.
