2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer Gets MPG—Just Not Many

Under the hood of the all-new Jeep Grand Wagoneer sits a 6.4-liter V-8 producing 471 hp and 455 lb-ft of torque that pairs with an eight-speed automatic. The Grand Wagoneer can be had with four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. The 4WD Grand Wagoneer has an EPA-rated 13/18/15 mpg city/highway/combined, whereas the RWD configuration offers about the same fuel economy (albeit better on the highway) at 13/19/15 mpg.

This unimpressive fuel economy should not be surprising. What else did you expect from a full-size luxury three-row SUV that will compete with the likes of the Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator? One based on the Ram pickup truck frame?

For comparison’s sake, the Navigator comes powered by a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 mated to a 10-speed automatic good for 450 hp and 510 lb-ft. Rear-drive Navigators get an EPA-estimated 16/22/18 mpg, while four-wheel-drive versions are rated for 16/20/17 mpg (city/hwy/combined).

Even though Cadillac’s Escalade is available with a more efficient diesel engine, the more comparable model has a standard 6.2-liter V-8 generating 420 hp and 460 lb-ft coupled with a 10-speed automatic. These gas-fed Escalade models with rear-wheel drive have an EPA-rated 15/20/17 mpg; four-wheel-drive models net 14/19/16 mpg (city/hwy/combined). That means both the Navigator and Escalade have slightly better fuel economy than the Grand Wagoneer; in the Escalade’s case, even better gas mileage is available from the diesel I-6.

Hey, if a few mpgs shy of greatness is of little consequence to you, the Jeep represents a welcome revival of an iconic family SUV. Starting this summer, families will get to enjoy on road trips in it across America. The Grand Wagoneer is priced from $88,995, and the lineup will include a blacked-out trim grade called Obsidian starting at $100,995 and the range-topping Series III, which has a window sticker of $105,995.
