The Redmi K50 series is coming, but what could it offer?

TL;DR

  • A Redmi executive has all but confirmed that the Redmi K50 series is coming.
  • A tipster suggests that the new phones will offer improved fast charging, video/imaging, and screen quality.

Redmi launched the Redmi K40 series earlier in the year, making it one of the cheapest flagship phone families of the year. The Xiaomi sub-brand isn’t stopping here either, as it looks like the company is already working on a follow-up series.

Redmi general manager Lu Weibing took to Weibo to ask users what features they’d like to see from “future K50 products.” Check out the machine-translated screenshot below.

Frequent Weibo tipster Digital Chat Station has also dropped a few apparent nuggets of Redmi K50 series information. More specifically, they suggest that the new phones will offer improvements to fast charging, video/imaging, and screen quality. Check out the machine-translated image below for the actual post.

Fast charging in particular would be a sensible area of improvement, as the Redmi K40 series tops out at 33W charging for the 4,520mAh batteries. That’s a pretty respectable figure, topping up the battery in just over 50 minutes, but we have seen rivals offering 50W or 65W charging too. So we’d be happy to see an upgrade here if battery degradation is kept in check.

There’s no word on when the K50 series will be revealed, but the timing of the Redmi executive’s tease suggests the phones will launch later this year (possibly within the next few months) rather than in 2022.

The Redmi K40 series was generally restricted to China, although the base model made its way to Europe and other locales as the Poco F3. The Redmi K40 Gaming Edition is also slated to launch outside China as the Poco F3 GT. So it stands to reason that at least one of the Redmi K50 series phones could land outside China, possibly as a rebranded device.
