Lenovo’s new Smart Clock 2 can wirelessly charge your phone

TL;DR

  • Lenovo has unveiled a Smart Clock 2 that can wirelessly charge your phone.
  • The bundled dock also gives you a gentle nightlight.
  • Lenovo will ship the Google Assistant display in September for $89.99.

How does Lenovo improve on the Smart Clock when it’s ultimately a no-frills Google Assistant device for the bedroom? By adding some of the other features you’d want on your nightstand, apparently. The company has introduced a Smart Clock 2 that, among other things, can wirelessly charge your phone.

Plug the Lenovo clock into its included dock and you’ll get a pad to recharge your phone overnight. It may seem redundant, but it will make sure your partner can still check the time and talk to Google when you take your phone out of the room. It even supports 7.5W and 10W charging, so you can top up many Android phones and iPhones as quickly as they’ll allow.

The clock also includes a soft, faint nightlight to help you find your way without waking your partner, Lenovo said.

Lenovo is otherwise offering a modest update with the Smart Clock 2. You’ll get a 4-inch LCD, a 3W speaker system, and a modest MediaTek MT8167S chip with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. As with the Google Nest Hub, there’s no camera (ostensibly for privacy’s sake) and a mute toggle for the microphone.

The Lenovo Smart Clock 2 should be available with the dock in September at a price of $89.99. That’s $10 more than the original clock and considerably more than the $50 Smart Clock Essential, but the company is clearly betting that it’ll be worthwhile if you don’t have to buy two or three separate gadgets.
