Margot Robbie Needs A Break From Playing Harley Quinn

After three films, Margot Robbie and Harley Quinn are nearly synonymous, but now the actor is looking to step away from the role for a while following the release of The Suicide Squad–and she’s not sure when she’d come back. The actor talked about her relationship with the role in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly.

“It was kind of back-to-back filming Birds {of Prey] and filming this, so I was kind of like, oof, I need a break from Harley because she’s exhausting,” Robbie said. “I don’t know when we’re next going to see her. I’m just as intrigued as everyone else is.”

Robbie first portrayed the anti-hero in the first Suicide Squad film. Her next film, Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), was one of the last films to hit theaters in early 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down theaters all over the world.

Next, she’ll reprise the role once again for James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which releases in just a few weeks on August 6. In other words, while Robbie’s workload has been quite full with fifteen non-DC films since the release of Suicide Squad, she’s spent a ton of time swinging blunt weapons and wearing clown makeup.

While Harley isn’t in Robbie’s future at the moment, she still has tons of big stuff on the way, including a Barbie film directed by Greta Gerwig and the next Pirates of the Caribbean film.

The Suicide Squad hits theaters and HBO Max on August 6. In addition to Margot Robbie, the film stars Idris Elba, John Cena, David Dastmalchian, Peter Capaldi, Sylvester Stallone, and more. While you wait for the film to hit theaters, you can check out the latest trailer, or learn why The Suicide Squad might not be the movie you’re expecting. You can also prepare for director James Gunn’s follow-up, an HBO Max series starring John Cena as the chrome-domed warrior Peacemaker, which arrives in January 2022.
