Xiaomi could be be planning the biggest Mi Band redesign ever

TL;DR

  • Word has it that Xiaomi is designing a new Mi Band with a 360-degree flexible display.
  • It could be called the Mi Band X.
  • The wearable might also feature a magnetic buckle.

In the world of wild rumors, a new one about Xiaomi’s plans for the Mi Band has just entered the mix. A leak claiming to show a slide from an official company presentation suggests that Xiaomi may be planning to change the Mi Band form factor we’ve come to know to over the years.

First shared on Weibo, the purported photo of the Xiaomi slide shows that the company may be designing a Mi Band with a 360-degree flexible display. Xiaomi is apparently referring to the device as the Mi Band X. However, that could just be an internal codename and or a name for a possible prototype.

The other distinguishing change promised in the presentation is a strapless design. The so-called Mi Band X would get a magnetic buckle and the overall device would be “extremely light and thin.” You can see the leaked slide and a translation of its text in the tweet embedded below.

– 360°flexible scroll screen without strap design
– Magnetic bracelet buckle

While there’s no confirmation that this slide indeed stems from an official Xiaomi presentation or that the supposed Mi Band X is in the works, it would spell the biggest redesign for the wearable if it ever comes to pass. It also won’t be all that unbelievable since we’ve already seen devices like the Nubia Alpha that, although super chunky, had a flexible display that would wrap around the wrist.

Meanwhile, Huami, the company that makes all the Mi Bands, already has a wearable called the Amazfit X with a curved OLED screen. It doesn’t have a magnetic clasp but features a display that bends 92 degrees around the wrist. It’s possible Xiaomi could use something similar for its reimagined Mi Band. It’s also very likely that this is just a concept the company is toying with. Nevertheless, a Mi Band redesign seems long overdue. Xiaomi increased the fitness tracker’s screen size recently, but the overall look has remained the same for years now.
