  • US brand Blu has launched the G91 Pro smartphone.
  • The phone offers much faster wired charging and more RAM than its predecessor.
  • We do see several cutbacks on paper though.

US smartphone brand Blu launched the G90 Pro last year, being marketed as a budget-focused gaming smartphone. Sure, it didn’t have a high refresh rate screen or flagship silicon, but it still delivered a respectable amount of power and a huge battery.

Now, Blu has gone back to the drawing board for the Blu G91 Pro, and it looks like we’ve got a few upgrades as well as a couple of downgrades. For starters, the new phone offers the Helio G90 4G SoC, which is actually a very slight downgrade over the G90 Pro’s Helio G90T processor.

Blu’s latest phone also sees a downgraded rear camera system on paper, swapping out the G90 Pro’s 48MP Sony IMX582 main camera for the more budget-focused Samsung Isocell GM1 48MP sensor. The G91 Pro also swaps out the previous phone’s 8MP ultra-wide camera in favor of a 5MP wide-angle camera. Otherwise, you’ve still got a pair of 2MP sensors for depth effects and macro shots. Of course, camera hardware isn’t the be-all-and-end-all of image quality, so we’ll need to wait for a verdict in this regard.

We do see a couple of major upgrades though, starting with charging speeds. The phone now has 30W wired charging versus 18W seen in the earlier device. This should result in noticeably faster charging times seeing that we’ve got a sizeable 5,000mAh battery on board. Otherwise, 10W wireless charging is still available if you prefer to use charging pads.

Another notable upgrade is that the new phone now has 6GB of RAM over the old phone’s 4GB. This should make multitasking a more pleasant endeavor.

The Blu G91 Pro is also equipped with a 6.7-inch FHD+ LCD panel (still 60Hz), 128GB of expandable storage, a 16MP camera in a center-mounted cutout, a rear fingerprint scanner, and Android 11.

Blu says the G91 Pro has a recommended price of $249.99 via the likes of Amazon, but it’s knocking $100 off this price as part of a launch promotion. The company is also giving away true wireless earbuds to the “first few hundred” people who buy the phone. The device goes on sale on August 25 and will be available in Moonstone and Graphite color options.
