Jake Gyllenhaal explains the strange way his new Netflix movie was shot

This week is a good one, because we’re finally getting more Jake Gyllenhaal on our screens. The Guilty is a 90-minute Netflix thriller directed by Antoine Fuqua about a 911 operator (Gyllenhaal) trying to save a kidnapped woman, and judging by the trailer it’s going to be a pretty tense viewing experience.

But it sounds like the filming experience wasn’t exactly a relaxing one, either. Appearing on The Tonight Show on Tuesday, Gyllenhaal explained that they shot the entire movie over 11 days in October 2020, mid-way through the pandemic — and a couple of days before filming was due to begin, Fuqua had to go into self-isolation.

“We basically found this van with monitors in it and we hard-wired the van to the stage, and Antoine directed the entire movie from a van a block away,” Gyllenhaal explained. “We would talk on the phone in between these takes, and when we were changing setups and we had a little bit of time they put a ladder over the wall of the stage, and I would climb up the ladder and he would come out of his van, and we would talk to each other like Romeo and Juliet.”

The Guilty drops on Netflix Oct. 1.
