Budget earbuds get more juice

TL;DR

  • The OnePlus Buds Z2 have leaked online again.
  • This latest leak includes specs too, such as Bluetooth 5.2 support and endurance details.

OnePlus launched the OnePlus Buds Z last year (seen above), bringing an affordable, durable, and fast-charging pair of true wireless earbuds to the table. The company is just about due for a successor, and we saw OnePlus Buds Z2 renders leak last month.

More apparent details and renders have now dropped courtesy of GizNext, and the latest images show a pair of earbuds that look largely similar to the earlier pictures. Meanwhile, the charging case seems to be identical to the previous images. Check out the picture below, showing purported Day White and Night Black options.

In terms of specifications, the OnePlus Buds Z2 are tipped to offer Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity, 10-meter range, an IP55 rating for the buds, and an IPX4 rating for the charging case. Those expecting higher quality wireless codecs might be disappointed here, as the buds are said to only offer AAC and SBC options. Otherwise, GizNext says you’ll get three microphones and “active noise reduction” as well.

In terms of endurance, the outlet says the buds offer a 40mAh battery each that will give you five hours of music playback with noise reduction enabled. This figure apparently goes up to seven hours with noise reduction disabled. By comparison, OnePlus said the first-generation Buds Z earbuds topped out at five hours for music playback.

The charging case will provide 27 hours of music playback with noise reduction enabled, going up to 38 hours with the feature turned off. Either way, this is better than the claimed 20 hours of playback for the previous earbuds.

There’s no word on pricing and availability, but rumors point to a launch later this month. The original buds started at $50, but OnePlus might have its work cut out to achieve the same price point this time.
