Carl Williams writes, “Final Fantasy VII (FF7) is arguably the game that ended the console war between Sega’s Saturn console and the original PlayStation. When the media hype hit for FF7 it was over. Sega was a company who had lost their way. They had absolutely nothing in development that could even stand proud in the shadow of Final Fantasy VII. Sony knew it too. That is probably why they allegedly shelled out big bucks to get the new Square Enix role-playing game as an exclusive to PlayStation. Originally released on September 7th, 1997 in North America, it was clear that this was a big push for both companies.”
