Maddy’s ‘bitch, you better be joking’ meme from ‘Euphoria,’ explained

The messy second season of HBO’s Euphoria has been fodder for many a meme.

People have been taking to Twitter and TikTok every Sunday night to react to the latest episode of the intense teen drama, which in turn has led to a lot of meme creation. But nothing has captured the zeitgeist quite like Maddy’s zinger in the third episode of the season.

To set the scene, Cassie is seconds away from a Nate-fueled mental breakdown in the girls’ bathroom, which has presented itself in her gingham outfit choice. Her friends mistakenly think she’s dressed up to audition for the drama club’s production of Oklahoma, which causes some confusion and a near meltdown. Maddy tells Cassie she’s dressed “like a country music star,” and Cassie asks, “In a good or bad way?”

To which Maddy responds, perfectly, with, “Bitch, you better be joking.” It’s one of the funniest scenes this season, providing some much-needed levity.

Actor Alexa Demie’s unflinching delivery and incredulous stare make it an incredible Maddy moment. She’s able to convey a scoff, raised eyebrow, and an eye roll with just her voice. Twitter users have turned the screenshot into a meme, altering the text and image of Maddy and Kat to make it apply to various other TV shows, movies, and songs. Is the meme a little played out? Of course? Is it still begrudgingly funny? Absolutely.
