Welcome back, linguistically minded friends! It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new Wordle, and I hope you’re all feeling good. But if you’re struggling a bit, here are a few tips and hints to help you figure out the answer to today’s puzzle.

You can jump all the way to the bottom of this article if you just want the answer to April 20’s Wordle puzzle given to you straight. However, if you’d rather get a few clues to guide you to the solution yourself, as well as strategies and other information, keep reading.

Wordle was originally created by engineer Josh Wardle as a cute gift for his partner, though the game soon became a daily habit for thousands around the globe (as well as new content for TikTok creators). Inspiring numerous clones and variations, the word guessing game was eventually bought by the New York Times, which still continues to put a new puzzle live every day.

Games inspired by Wordle include battle royale Squabble, music identification game Heardle, and variants such as Dordle and Quordle that have you trying to guess multiple words at once.

Not the day you’re after? Here’s the Wordle answer for April 19.

What’s the best Wordle starting word?

In my humble opinion, the best Wordle starting word is the one that speaks to your heart. But if you want a more strategic approach to it, we have plenty of ideas to help you find what works for you. Generally, it’s a good idea to fit at least two vowels into your first word, as well as more common consonants such as S, T, R, or N.

Explore the Wordle archive

If just one Wordle per day isn’t enough to state your wordlust, you can dive in and play the whole archive of past Wordles. Just make sure you don’t have anything pressing you were meant to do today!

Is Wordle getting harder?

No, Wordle isn’t getting harder, even though you may feel like it is! Though conversely, if you feel as though you haven’t been getting enough of a challenge, you can switch on Hard Mode.

Why are there two different Wordle answers some days?

No, you aren’t imagining it — sometimes there are two different correct Wordle answers on the same day. This is due to some changes the New York Times made after acquiring the game.

Here’s a subtle hint for today’s Wordle answer:

It’s the name of a short zombie film that went viral a few years ago. It’s also the name of a style of pants.

Does today’s Wordle answer have a double letter?

Nope, we’re dealing with 100 percent original letters today.

Today’s Wordle is a 5-letter word that starts with…

The word of the day begins with the letter C, for Charlie. The word is not Charlie.

What’s the answer to Wordle today?

Okay, now’s your last chance to turn back and try to guess it yourself!

Ready for the answer?

The solution to Wordle #305 is…

CARGO.

As mentioned, Cargo is an excellent Australian zombie short which was later remade into a full length feature film starring Martin Freeman. It is also the name of an excellent style of pants that features many useful pockets for carrying snacks, cool rocks, and feathers.

Don’t worry if you didn’t get it today — the good thing about Wordle is that there’s always another opportunity to try again. Come back tomorrow for more helpful clues and hints!
