How to take and find screenshots on Steam

There are quite a few ways to take screenshots while gaming, and most gaming platforms have their own overlays to help you with that. Steam has one too, and it is quite simple to take screenshots on Steam. Here’s how to take screenshots on Steam and where to find them.

To take a screenshot in Steam, press the F12 key while in a Steam game. To find a Steam screenshot on your computer, click the View button on the menu bar in Steam, and then click Screenshots. Click the Show on disk button in the Screenshot uploader pop-up to open the folder.

How to take a screenshot in Steam

Taking a screenshot with Steam is rather simple. Fire up the game via Steam, and once you’re in the game, you can hit the F12 key to take a screenshot. Steam will automatically save a screenshot in its default folder. You’ll get a notification at the bottom of your screen to the right, saying Screenshot saved.

If you want to change the keyboard key that takes the screenshot in Steam, you can do that via Steam settings. Open Steam, click the button on the menu bar at the top left that says Steam and click Settings.

A Settings window will pop up. Click In-game in the left navigation pane. Under Screenshot Shortcut Keys in the right pane, you’ll see the current key listed, which is F12 by default. Click the cross button at the right of the field to unbind the default key. Click your preferred key to assign it to Steam screenshots.

Where are Steam screenshots saved?

Steam stores the screenshots in a rather complicated location in the Steam install location folder. However, there’s an easy way to locate them. Open up Steam, click View on the top left of the menu bar, and click Screenshots in the drop-down menu.

Steam will open a Screenshot uploader window. This window lists the screenshots taken via Steam.

Click the Show on disk button at the bottom to open the folder on your computer.

If you want to change the folder where screenshots are saved, you can do so via Steam settings. Open Steam, click the Steam button on the menu bar at the top left and click Settings.

A Settings window will pop up. Click In-game in the left navigation pane. Under Screenshot Shortcut Keys in the right pane, there’ll be a button that says Screenshot folder. Click the button.

A pop-up to select the new folder will open up. Click the preferred folder for saving screenshots, or make a new folder in the preferred location with the New folder.. button. Click Select to save the new screenshot location.

Screenshots will now save in the selected location. You can use the View -> Screenshots shortcut to open the new location and find your Steam screenshots.
