Feeling comfortable in your career can turn into stagnation without you realizing. Then, the excitement you used to feel about your work turns to frustration, boredom, and maybe even resentment.

The thing is, it’s not the job you’re frustrated with — it’s more than likely yourself. Many of the most common career issues are self-inflicted, which is good news because that means you can also be the one to turn things around. Here are three unique ways you can get more out of your career — and they’re simpler than you think.

Commit to continuous learning

There’s always more to learn. Always. And in order to stay relevant in your field, continue on an upward trajectory, and stay interested in what you’re doing, you need to commit to continuous learning. Many studies and notable thinkers have spoken on the importance of lifelong learning for personal as well as professional reasons — with benefits ranging from increased competitiveness and employability to enhanced social inclusion and individual development.

Continuous learning could mean something different for everyone, but generally it involves familiarizing yourself with the latest software and techniques for your current position. For example, if you’re in the IT world, you might want to dive into web3 and the metaverse. Take a course about blockchain and NFTs to wrap your head around it. Maybe you want to move up the ranks at your current company and need to hone your managerial skills. Some DevOps training can help you foster an Agile team culture. Continuous learning could also mean learning a new language, reading more books, or making more connections.

Start a side hustle

Sometimes the best way to stop feeling stagnant in your career is to shift your focus elsewhere. Step into another realm by starting a side hustle doing something that piques your interest. Maybe you’ve always wanted to explore your creative side, but didn’t know where to start. A graphic design course can help you find your flow and you can apply your new artistic interest to a freelance gig. Or perhaps you’re looking for something more hands-off. Real estate investment can end up being an incredibly lucrative side hustle if you put in the time and effort.

Diversify your skill-set

By learning completely new skills, you can add value to your existing role. Not to mention, you might even secure a better paycheck. Think outside the box and try your hand at something completely different than your existing position. If you’re used to blending in behind the scenes at work, try learning project management. You might find that a position of power is more in your nature than you thought. If you’re a word person, try boosting your financial literacy with some introductory investment courses. Maybe you’ll find that the mixture of words and numbers opens new doors and changes the trajectory of your career. Don’t be afraid of the unknown; embrace it.
