Why Black Adam Was Delayed

Since the pandemic, fans worldwide have gotten used to the upcoming movies they’re most excited for winding up delayed–sometimes multiple times, without much explanation. The Wrap has an unusual exception to this pattern with a new report that Black Adam, which is due out in October, with reports digging into why this DC tentpole has been pushed back from July.

The answer, at least in part, has to do with a backlog with VFX studios. As producer and president of production at Seven Bucks Productions Hiram Garcia told The Wrap, “We’re just in a world right now where there was a huge and understandable freeze-up when the pandemic hit and a lot of productions were put on hold… Now that the industry has really roared back, the pipeline for VFX is so jammed.”

Black Adam wrapped filming in July 2021, and at that time was expected to arrive in theaters on July 29, 2022. But back in March, Black Adam and The Flash, Aquaman 2, and Shazam 2 all had their release dates shuffled around. On The John Campea Show, the film critic reported that for Black Adam, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Wound up at least in part directly impacting Black Adam’s production schedule and especially reshoots (via The Direct).

The Black Adam movie will star Johnson as the titular super-villain/anti-hero, which will introduce the Justice Society of America to the DCEU. The film also stars Bodhi Sabongui in an unnamed role, Pierce Brosnan as Dr. Fate, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher.
