Avatar 2’s Edie Falco Assumed The Movie Came Out Already And Flopped

While audiences are making up their minds about the long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water, star Edie Falco (The Sopranos, Nurse Jackie) said in a recent media appearance that she thought it already came out years ago and flopped. On The View, Falco revealed that she filmed her scenes for the movie over four years ago.

“The second Avatar I shot four years ago,” Falco said. “I’ve been busy and doing stuff. Somebody mentioned Avatar and I thought, ‘Oh, I guess it came out and it didn’t do very well because I didn’t hear anything about it.’ It happens!” Falco adds that she saw the first one right when it came out, but is “excited” to see Avatar 2.

Lots of other people, meanwhile, have been aware of Avatar 2’s release–though at the box office, it’s still been coming in below expectations. The James Cameron-directed sequel raked in over $435 million dollars at the box office after being projected to hit half a billion. Deadline reports Avatar: The Way of Water missed the mark partly because of COVID-19 concerns in China. The movie was predicted to earn $100 million there but ended up with $57.1 million. The sequel didn’t hit expectations domestically either. Last week, Avatar: The Way of Water looked like it may bring in $150 million to $175 million at theaters. Instead, the sci-fi flick settled with $134 million.

For more on the sequel, check out GameSpot’s Avatar: The Way of Water review. Mason Downey found the film to be mediocre, adding it “fails to live up to its legacy as a bleeding edge spectacle.” The sequel stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, and Kate Winslet.
