iOS 17.4 code may have accidentally revealed new iPad Pro camera feature

Apple might be on the way to fixing the weirdest problem with the highest-end iPad Pro.

As it stands, the 2022 iPad Pro‘s front camera is on the top of the device when viewed in landscape mode. In other words, turning the iPad on the side creates an odd angle for video calls.

However, according to 9to5Mac, some stray code found in the iOS 17.4 beta update suggests Apple could fix this soon with the next-gen iPad model.

iOS 17.4 code reveals much more than just what’s coming to iPhone

To be more specific, there is language in the update that pretty explicitly references putting an iPad in landscape (horizontal) mode in order to set up Face ID, which isn’t possible on any current iPad.

The 10th generation iPad has a camera in the right place for that, but it doesn’t support Face ID.

“During Face ID setup, iPad needs to be in landscape with the camera at the top of the screen. Once setup is complete, Face ID works in portrait and landscape,” one of the messages says, according to 9to5Mac.

Reports indicate that Apple may release a new iPad Pro in 2024 with, among other things, shiny new OLED displays.

It’s possible that these new iPads are the ones being referenced in this code, but we won’t know for sure until the devices are in our hands.
