Galaxy Z Fold 7 is Samsung’s slimmest and lightest foldable yet

Summary

  • Samsung teases the Galaxy Z Fold 7 as its thinnest, lightest, and most advanced foldable device yet.
  • The upcoming foldable could rival the Oppo Find N5 with its slimness.
  • But that slim design might come at the expense of battery life, with Samsung possibly sticking to the same 4,400mAh cell as Z Fold 6.

With the Galaxy Z Fold 7 rumored to launch in early July, Samsung has already started building hype for its next foldable. Last week, the company teased that its next foldable will deliver an Ultra experience and may feature a larger display with better cameras. Now, Samsung is teasing “the new era of the Galaxy Z series,” with the Z Fold 7 being its “thinnest, lightest, and most advanced foldable yet.”

The foldables launch this summer

In its announcement, Samsung notes how its engineers have refined the Galaxy Z series with every generation, making them thinner, lighter, and durable. And this year, “that journey reaches a new milestone. The newest Galaxy Z series is the thinnest, lightest and most advanced foldable yet — meticulously crafted and built to last.”

The accompanying teaser video provides a brief glimpse of the Z Fold 7’s thinner design.

The Galaxy Z Fold 6 measures 12.2mm when folded and 6.1mm in an unfolded state. While that’s slimmer than the Z Fold 5, it falls short of other Chinese foldables. For comparison, the Oppo Find N5 currently holds the title of the world’s slimmest book-style foldable, measuring just 8.9mm when folded and an impressive 4.21mm when unfolded.

Rumors suggest that Samsung will challenge this crown with its upcoming Fold 7. As per a leak, the Galaxy foldable could measure just 4.54mm thick when unfolded and 9mm when folded. Even if it doesn’t undercut the Oppo, the Z Fold 7 could still become the thinnest foldable available in the US, beating the likes of the Pixel 9 Pro Fold and the OnePlus Open.

Galaxy Z Fold 7’s slimness might come at the expense of battery life

Sadly, while Oppo manages to fit a meaty 5,600mAh cell inside the N5’s super-slim body, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 might fall short in this regard. Leaks suggest that the device will stick to the same 4,400mAh cell as found on its predecessor. This is despite the cover display growing to 6.49 inches and the inner folding display expanding to 8 inches — up from the Z Fold 6’s 7.6-inch panel.

Samsung apparently plans to utilize AI to extract more runtime from the tiny battery. But that may not make much of a difference, especially with the power-hungry Snapdragon 8 Elite running the show.
