Hyper Light Breaker Winding Down Development Amid Studio Layoffs

Earlier this year, developer Heart Machine released Hyper Light Breaker in early access after a nearly two-year delay. However, the game’s development is winding down due to layoffs at Heart Machine.

As reported by Game Developer, a spokesperson for Heart Machine said the layoffs “will include a conclusion on the project, [and] it reflects broader forces beyond our control, including shifts in funding, corporate consolidation and the uncertain environment many small studios like us are navigating today.”

A follow-up statement from Heart Machine indicated that it isn’t completely abandoning Hyper Light Breaker, and there will be a more polished version of the game coming in January 2026 as at least one final update.

“We plan to deliver something meaningful and as polished and complete as we can given our current circumstances,” Heart Machine’s spokesperson told Game Developer. “We’re doing our best to refine what we can, complete key systems, and have the game culminate in a satisfying punctuation point.”

Hyper Light Breaker is the prequel to 2016’s Hyper Light Drifter, which earned a 9 out of 10 score in GameSpot’s review. GameSpot also had a hands-on look at Heart Machine’s next game, Possessor(s), a metroidvania that will be released on November 11 on PC and PS5.
