Android Auto’s next feature wants to turn your car into an office

Android Auto is nothing but a driving-friendly version of your phone on your car’s dashboard. This is the reason Android Auto has limited app availability, and the ones available don’t offer all the features. This is to minimize distractions while driving. We have recently seen YouTube’s debut in Android Auto with very limited features.

Now, Google is planning to introduce support for another app on Android Auto, but this time around, it’s not for entertainment. Android Auto’s next app support targets office commuters or anyone working on the go. And the Mountain View tech giant has officially confirmed that it’s coming soon.

On its official Workspace Updates website, Google has confirmed that a version of Meet for Android Auto will be available ‘soon,’ without specifying a particular date. The company hasn’t revealed details regarding how Google Meet will work on Android Auto, but it has dropped enough hints about what you can expect by announcing Meet support for Apple CarPlay.

Google has already started rolling out Google Meet support for Apple CarPlay, and the rollout should be complete in the next few days. However, as noted by Google, it’s not a full-fledged Google Meet app with all the features that you get on the desktop and mobile. While you’ll be able to access Google Meet directly from your car’s dashboard using CarPlay, its functionality will be limited.

For example, when you attend a meeting, you won’t see the video content, and your camera won’t be turned on. You’ll be able to hear the audio from the meeting and can use your microphone to speak. So, if meeting organizers share their screen and demonstrate something important, attending the meeting from your car display still isn’t a good idea.

In all likelihood, all these limitations will exist in Google Meet on Android Auto when it launches to ensure safety. In addition to letting users join meetings, Google Meet on Android Auto will also likely allow viewing of the upcoming schedule. This feature is currently available on Meet for CarPlay. It is also enabled by default on Apple CarPlay, so we expect the same when it arrives for Android Auto.

We can also safely assume that Meet for Android Auto will be available to all Google Workspace customers, Workspace individual subscribers, and users with personal Google accounts, just like Meet for CarPlay does.
