Spotify will now let you buy physical books without leaving the app

Back in February this year, Spotify announced that it would soon make the jump from selling digital books to physical ones. The move is official now, with the streaming giant rolling out Bookshop.org integration in the US and the UK.

This comes soon after Spotify introduced Page Match, which helps users pick up a physical book exactly where it was left off on Spotify, and vice versa.

The app will also sell physical books this spring

Spotify announced the development in a new Newsroom post, via TechCrunch, where it also announced the expansion of Page Match to more languages, the arrival of Audiobook Recaps on Android, the debut of Audiobook Charts in Germany, and more.

The main development here is the arrival of the Bookshop.org integration, which will let Spotify users purchase physical books directly via the Spotify app on Android.

“By connecting digital discovery with physical book sales, we’re giving listeners more ways to experience the stories they love while supporting authors and independent bookstores,” wrote the streaming giant.

It’s worth noting that the integration is only rolling out on Android for now. iOS users can expect the functionality to land next week.

Here’s how the integration will work

  • If you’re browsing audiobooks, you will now see a prompt to “Get a copy for your bookshelf.”
  • Tapping this button redirects users to Bookshop.org.
  • This is where you can check out stores, inventory, pricing, shipping details, and more.

Here’s how you’ll be able to Page Match once you have both physical and digital copies of a book

  • Open the Spotify mobile app and find the title you’re reading.
  • Tap the Page Match button.
  • Use your camera to scan a page in your physical book.
  • Spotify finds your spot in the audiobook.
  • Ready to return to print? Scan again to find the right place in the text.
