Pixel users got access to a fresh new beta today for Android 17 with the release of Beta 4. Per usual, Google delivered a ton of updates, with mainly bug fixes, but in the background, there’s a lot to be discovered. Despite only being live for just a few hours, we’re seeing something quite exciting in the code that could eventually find its way to future Pixel devices.
Lighting a new way
Android Authority saw indications of some kind of illumination feature back in Beta 2, but what it is becomes much clearer now with the release of Beta 4, with the code containing something called ‘Pixel Glow.’ If this all comes to fruition, it looks like Google could include some lighting on the back of future devices that would give users a more subtle indication when notifications come in.
The description for Pixel Glow is as follows: ‘Stay in the moment without losing touch. Pixel Glow uses subtle light and color on the back of your device to inform you of important activity when it’s face down.’ Now, we’ve seen a lot of hardware changes and refinements over the years, but this could be one of the more exciting visual enhancements yet for Pixel phones.
This goes beyond a flashing screen or camera flash, and it means that these devices will need to have dedicated hardware to make it happen. Or so the code shared by Android Authority indicates at this point. It’s unclear whether this will appear on the upcoming Pixel 11 or something more distant, but it would be fantastic to see it in 2026.
Where could it be hiding?
However, we have seen some early renders of the Pixel 11, and there weren’t any indications that there was hardware to create these illuminations. Maybe it’s located in or under the camera bar? Naturally, there could just be inaccuracies with the renders, too. That’s one issue when it comes to digging through code. It’s exciting to see these features ahead of time, but you never know when they will go live.
Or they could end up being canceled or removed. However, we think there’s a pretty good chance that this will arrive at some point, since we’ve already seen LEDs being used for this purpose on phones from other brands. To take things even further, Google has done this before on its own Chromebooks that were released in the past.
While the feature is small, it has the potential to provide a small burst of color that can really make a device visually pop. With that said, Pixel Glow, when it arrives, will be a convenient and subtle way to see notifications, at the very least, which some people will like. It could also become a new design choice that will redefine the way Pixel phones look going forward.
