X’s custom timeline feature will sting for TweetDeck mourners

X has added the ability to sort your feed into multiple topic feeds, if you’re still on the platform. And yes, it sounds exactly like TweetDeck (RIP).

Announced Wednesday, the Elon Musk-owned platform now lets users build “Custom Timelines,” that collate up to 75 feeds on the home tab.

In an X post, Nikita Bier, the company’s head of product, revealed the Grok-powered feature, which is available in early access to those paying $8 per month ($84 per year) for X Premium, and only on iOS (Android promised “soon”).

“It’s powered by Grok’s understanding of every post with the algorithm’s personalization — meaning every timeline is made just for you,” wrote Bier. “And it works even better when it’s a topic you already engage with.”

If you’re a TweetDeck mourner, this might sting. The social media dashboard, which let users organise their feed across topics and accounts, was rebranded as XPro in 2023 and moved behind the X Premium (formerly Twitter Blue) subscription.

Giving X users the ability to organise their own timeline topics might also address the For You feed algorithm’s lurch to the far right, though that remains to be seen.
