Fitbit’s AI coach just got way more personal and useful

Google is hard at work on improving the Fitbit experience with its Gemini-powered personal health coach. After expanding the public preview program to more countries internationally earlier this month and revamping the Sleep Score metrics, it is now enhancing the AI coach to deliver a more personalized experience.

Google says that Fitbit’s personal health coach will now provide weekly fitness plans based on your goals and preferences. It will also roll out the ability to customize the plan, targets, and workouts next week. With this change, which the company says it is making based on user feedback, it hopes to deliver a more flexible coaching experience. Only Fitbit Premium subscribers will gain access to this enhancement, though.

Another notable improvement is step-by-step guidance for the recommended workouts. This should help you better understand how to perform the exercises.

Other changes are as follows:

  • Personalized messages throughout your day in the Today tab, including morning moments, post-workout summaries and end-of-day or end-of-week updates.
  • More natural ways of checking-in with your coach for updates by tapping the Ask Coach chat.

You will gain access to a more personal health coach in the Fitbit app over the next couple of weeks through the public preview program.

Fitbit’s personal health coach may debut under a new name

These improvements build on the revamped Sleep Score, which takes a more “holistic” approach and provides more detailed insights into your deep sleep, interruptions, and more. As part of this, the Fitbit app will show five sleep-related metrics: Time to sound sleep, sound sleep, restlessness, interruptions, and full awakenings.

Based on leaks, it appears Google intends to launch Fitbit’s AI personal health coach alongside its screen-less Whoop rival, the Fitbit Air, under a new Google Health branding. Google may completely replace Fitbit’s premium subscription with its Google Health subscription, as otherwise, it would make no sense to offer two health-focused subscriptions.

Reports indicate the tracker will debut around Google I/O 2026 in mid-May, which also explains Google’s rapid pace of rollout of new features for the personal health coach. It wants the premium subscription to be ready by then, as it will be a key selling point for the band.
