Valve has finally taken the wraps off its next-generation Steam Controller. In an official announcement, the company has confirmed both the pricing and release date for its latest controller.

The company’s new controller is dropping next week for a $99 price tag, which makes it a premium gaming controller. Designed as a part of a larger ecosystem, the Steam Controller is spearheading the new hardware drop.

When does the Steam Controller launch?

While the company first confirmed its broader hardware push a while back, only the Steam Controller is launching on May 4, 2026. Meanwhile, the Steam Machine and Steam Frame headset have been delayed due to component shortages. But this staggered release isn’t surprising, considering the various recent leaks that included early reviews, retailer listings, and more.

Now, Valve is just making it official.

How it fits into the Steam ecosystem

Valve’s new Steam Controller has its strengths in versatility. It is built as a PC-first input device that is designed to work seamlessly across Steam. According to the company’s store listing, the Steam Controller promises comfort for long gaming sessions and customizable controls, which is always great for personalized functions.

Just like its predecessor, the latest Steam Controller leans into features that go beyond a standard console by adding trackpad input and deeper software-level customization through Steam. It’s also compatible across platforms, including Windows, macOS, and Linux, reinforcing its role as a universal controller for PC gaming setups.

Even the price stands out

At $99, the Steam Controller sits above mainstream controllers but below high-end “pro” models. Valve appears to be targeting players who want more control and flexibility rather than just a plug-and-play experience. While its pricing does put it ahead of the basic controllers out there, Valve is leaning on ecosystem integration and customziation as its main selling points.
