Motorola’s Z Fold challenger finally has a US price, and it could be worse

After months of speculation, and the official European pricing, we finally have a US price for Motorola’s new Z Fold competitor, the Razr Fold — and, it, er, could be worse.

Motorola has confirmed the new Razr Fold will start from $1,899, making it more expensive than the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold, but cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7, rather appropriately putting Motorola in the mid-range of the prices. It was also revealed that pre-orders will open in just a few weeks time.

Motorola’s Razr Fold isn’t just copying Samsung’s popular foldables

Early rumors of the Razr Fold’s pricing had people hoping that Motorola’s first book-style phone would come in closer to the $1,500 mark, but given how much has changed in the phone market in the first part of this year, a higher price was inevitable. $1,899 isn’t exactly pocket change, but it does fit into the general price range a lot of this style of foldable is sitting.

It’s also important to note Motorola is doing something very different to the established players in this scene.

For instance, Motorola isn’t pushing the top spec of processor in this phone, which may seem like an insult in a phone priced at almost $2,000 — but put down your pitchforks, because it’s still worth your attention.

The Razr Fold is leveraging the newest battery technology, silicon-carbon cells. These new batteries allow for faster charging and larger capacities, which may be why it’s packing a 6,000mAh battery with 80W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. That’s some seriously snappy recharging power, and enough battery power to hopefully last even a massive foldable for the day.

Plus, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 may not be the latest Snapdragon chip, it’s still likely to be plenty powerful, and the lower power requirements may push the massive battery even further.

The phone even comes with a stylus. Neither Samsung nor Google can claim that, so happy scrawlers will get a big win here.

The Motorola Razr Fold will be available for pre-order from May 14, and it will release a week later, on May 21.

The pricing of $1,899 may seem high, and it is. But it’s certainly a comparable phone to its competition, and Motorola’s phones often get more aggressively discounted than other brands, so there’s definitely a chance you’ll see more of these around than the price suggests.

Personally, I like the cut of Motorola’s jib here, and if the chance to grab a discounted Razr Fold arises, I will definitely have to think hard about whether I treat myself or not.
