Samsung News adds short-form video to take on TikTok’s growing news dominance

Samsung News is trying to reach more news readers by catering to news viewers. It’s just introduced short-form videos from its news publisher partners to the app.

As with Samsung News itself, the clips are available via the app on Galaxy phones and tablets released in 2023 and later and running Android 13 or higher. The feature is rolling out now in the US and Canada in English, with planned expansion to other countries and languages.

Short form, big audience

The move is a canny one since about one-fifth of US adults get their news from TikTok, a finding from a Pew Research Center study from September 2025.

“Galaxy users consume news in different ways, whether it’s through quick video updates or in-depth reporting,” said Maya Harris, VP & Head of Strategic Partnerships for Samsung’s TV & Mobile Services in a statement. “We’re continuing to evolve Samsung News to meet those needs, with more formats, more trusted sources and a personalized experience that puts the day’s most important stories front and center.”

Vetted news sources

Consuming news shorts on Samsung News, as compared to TikTok could also help with misinformation, since the Pew study found that those who rely on TikTok are as likely to get that “news” from celebrities and influencers as they are from news outlets or journalists.

By contrast, the short videos on Samsung News come from traditional media outlets. The initial outlets span news, finance, sports, lifestyle, and entertainment, and include ABC News, EatingWell, Food & Wine, Byrdie, Travel + Leisure, Entertainment Weekly, USA Today, and People.

The videos are selected by Samsung’s editorial team. By following topics and hitting “like” on the videos, people can direct the algorithm toward their interests.

A differentiator

So far, Samsung News’ competitors do not offer a similar feature.

Apple News does not have short-form video and on Google News, short-form videos are only available via Search or Discover.
