The update also makes moving a digital car key between a user’s own devices easier.
Three new roles
The sharing feature included in the update introduces three roles: co-owner, guest, and service.
Co-owner is a copy of the original digital car key and grants the same level of permissions it has. Guest can be used for family or friends, while service is for valet and service station use.
To share a car key, open Google Wallet, tap the digital car key, select Share Car Key, and then select a user or app to share with. Before you’re able to share, you’ll be asked to name the shared key and review its settings (these differ between vehicle models).
Compatible devices and cars
The digital car key feature works with Pixel phones (Pixel 6 and later, including the Pixel Fold), the Samsung Galaxy series (S21 and later), and select other Android devices that run Android 12 and up.
Whether or not a digital car key is available for a vehicle depends on the manufacturer. Some that offer the feature are Audi, BMW, Cadillac, Genesis,Hyundai, Kia, Lotus, Mercedes-Benz, Mini, Polestar, Porsche, Rivian, Tesla, and Volvo.
