7 things you need to know about the Oura Ring 5, the world’s smallest smart ring

The Oura Ring 5 is 40% smaller than the Oura Ring 4, and the shape is curvier and thinner than before too. It’s 6.09mm wide and 2.28mm thick, and the weight starts at just two grams.

For comparison, the Oura Ring 4 is 7.99mm wide and 2.88mm thick, and the minimum weight is 3.3 grams. The Oura Ring 5 is available in sizes six to 13, it has an IP68 dust and water resistance rating and is water-resistant to 100 meters.

Only in titanium

The Oura Ring 5 is currently only available in titanium, and not the recent ceramic finish added to the Oura Ring 4 range.

Oura says the new physical vapor deposition (PVD) finish makes the titanium more scratch resistant. This is a good thing, as the Oura Ring 4’s titanium finish was easily scratched, something the ceramic model avoids.

It comes in sliver, black, Stealth, and Brushed Silver, plus a new gold finish that’s lighter than before, and a copper-like Deep Rose.

The domes are back

The Oura Ring 4 introduced a flat, dome-free underside design that did away with the nubbins that contained the sensors on previous versions. This has changed again for the Oura Ring 5.

Oura has added low-profile domes back onto the underside of the smart ring, which it says will result in better skin contact. They contain more powerful LEDs for more consistent readings.

It’s just one part of an entire overhaul of the Oura Ring 5’s hardware, which encompasses everything from the optical sensors and the battery, to the sensor architecture and mechanical layout.

Holly Shelton, Oura’s Chief Product Officer, said:

Oura Ring 5 is the most significant leap in smart ring history. To make something 40% smaller without sacrificing an ounce of accuracy, we had to rethink every assumption — the sensors, the battery, the architecture, the geometry of the ring itself. The result is the most capable wearable we’ve ever made, small enough to fit seamlessly into everyday life, and significant enough to set a new standard.

The price has changed slightly

The Oura Ring 5’s basic black and silver models now cost $399, up from the $349 of the Oura Ring 4. The Premium finishes (gold, Stealth, Deep Rose, and Brushed Silver) are $499, which is the same as before.

The monthly subscription remains in place to access the vast majority of the Oura Ring 5’s data and health advice, and still costs $6 per month or $70 per year if you pay up front.

Oura suggests everyone uses a fitting kit

If you’ve never owned a smart ring before, it’s essential to order one of the fitting kits before committing to a size. Wear one of these plastic rings for 24 hours to find the right size for you.

For the Oura Ring 5, Oura recommends everyone try a fitting kit, even if you already wear an Oura Ring, due to the new smaller size making the smart ring feel different on your finger.

The kit is free if you order through Oura’s own online store, or if purchased separately for $10, the cost is credited to your final Oura Ring purchase.

New software features aren’t Oura Ring 5 specific

Along with the Oura Ring 5, Oura has announced a selection of new and updated features, but none appear to be exclusive to the Oura Ring 5, and apply to everyone who owns an Oura Ring Gen 3 onwards.

Most notable is Blood Pressure Signals, which sees Oura catch up with competitor RingConn. Like other systems, it doesn’t measure blood pressure, but once configured using a blood pressure cuff, it can alert wearers of any signs that suggest increasing blood pressure.

Nighttime Breathing is a 30-day rolling view of any sleep-related breathing issues, complete with guidance on why they may have impacted sleep performance.

These two features are linked into a new Health Radar feature, which expands on the already excellent Symptom Radar, to give a greater overview of why you feel the way you do, and if any action may need to be taken.

Ricky Bloomfield, Chief Medical Officer at Oura, said:

[Health Radar] proactively brings together patterns people would otherwise have to search for— shifts in blood pressure signals that may indicate cardiovascular strain or more frequent breathing disturbances during sleep — so it’s easier to see when something needs attention.

It’s worth noting the Blood Pressure Signals, Nighttime Breathing, and GLP-1 Insights features will only be available in the US, India, and the United Arab Emirates when they launch at the beginning of June.

Finally, Oura has added the ability to track and manage GLP-1 medication, and combine it with Oura’s key sleep, readiness, and activity data points, for a complete picture of how they affect the way you feel.

When will the Oura Ring 5 be available?

The Oura Ring 5 is available to pre-order now from Oura, and it will be released on June 4.
