Putting some room for play in playlists
Playlist folder organization has finally moved off the desktop and onto mobile.
You can now create playlist folders right in the app and then move playlists into them. That means that when you’re on the treadmill at the gym, you can round up all your workout playlists and move them into one place.
And, once you’re inside a playlist on your phone, you can bulk edit and reorganize. So you can move and remove multiple tracks, podcast episodes, and books in one fell swoop.
The final feature that’s new to Android devices is a reshuffle button. It’s a one-tap solution that’s designed to do away with tapping shuffle off and then back on again to change up what you’re listening to. You’ll find it in the play queue at the bottom of the screen.
The bad news for Android
Android users won’t have the ability to download music and podcasts in the background that iOS users have just gotten. The feature works when the device is offline and sends a notification when downloading is complete.
Any Android users who have stared at their screen waiting for downloads while catching a few minutes of wifi or cell service while traveling is now envious of those with iOS.
AP has reached out to Spotify to see if or when this will reach Android users.
Features rolling out now
These changes are rolling out worldwide for Premium subscribers today.
Anecdotally, I checked for the update and don’t have it yet. I will be sad, however, if the update does away with the disco ball icon that Spotify has been sporting for its 20th anniversary. Though I am apparently among its few fans, as its appearance has caused a huge backlash.
