What should you watch this weekend? It might not be the eternal question, but it is an old one.
There are too many choices on streaming and faced with them, it’s easy to fall into a comfort watch. But even the most comfortable things can wear thin after a while.
So I’ve done the work of sorting through what’s new and by giving you less to choose from, the more likely you might be to watch one of them.
Cape Fear (Apple TV)
There are two Cape Fear movies, and they are each chilling in their own ways. Now, a limited series spreads out the scary across 10 episodes. This third take is executive produced by Martin Scorsese (who directed the Robert DeNiro version) and Steven Spielberg, and stars Amy Adams and Patrick Wilson as the couple being terrorized. The psychopath who menaces them is played by Javier Bardem, who knows from scary (just click play on No Country for Old Men and make a pact with yourself to never take a risk and criticize someone’s bad haircut).
Office Romance (Netflix)
Rom-coms are far and few between now, so we should rejoice that someone who has made more than a few sparkle is in a new one. In Office Romance, Jennifer Lopez is the CEO of an airline hit by lawsuits and Brett Goldstein is a lawyer brought in to help with them. What happens next is given away in the title. The two must keep their relationship a secret, which lends the necessary frisson to the story.
Not Suitable for Work (Hulu)
The title of this Mindy Kaling-created show seems like an appropriate follow-up to the film above. It follows five fresh-out-of-college professionals who live in a Murray Hill apartment building. It’s not gritty like Girls or seductive like Sex and the City, but more friendly like, well, Friends.
79th Tony Awards (Paramount+)
This year the Tony Awards are being hosted by Pink for some reason. You can tune in just to find out if she’ll sail over the audience or you could watch because you want to catch a bit of Broadway hits The Lost Boys, Schmigadoon!, Titaníque, Ragtime, and Cats: The Jellicle Ball.
The Pout-Pout Fish (Prime Video)
Family-friendly fair can be found under the sea this weekend with The Pout-Pout Fish. It’s based on the children’s book of the same name. Adults will be glad to hear for the acting talents of Nick Offerman, Miranda Otto, and Amy Sedaris. It’s a buddy comedy about a gruff older fish and a spunky younger fish trying to save their home.
